Welcome to the “Year of Renewal”.
The first week in 2012 is nearly over and I restarted writing on my chapter on supply chain risk management from a practitioner’s perspective. Hopefully finishing by the end of the month.

Year of Renewal

2012 is my year of renewal and I just started with a new website design. I do not think it needs a lot of explanation, so I just used Skitch to create a graphical howto.

There are still some things not as I’d like them to be. This morning I had to make some fixes for those who still use the Internet Explorer with versions below 8. It is still not perfect, but I will continue to work on some aspects anyway.

News

There weren’t many news during the last days, but I found two articles with some new thoughts on 2011’s hot topics.

The Bangkok Post summarizes the local issues during the flooding. The Thai Industry Association summarizes the situation as follows: “The private sector has no clue how to react when a devastating natural disaster occurs”. Thereby, highlighting the massive failure to account for the regional risk structure by many global companies. (Bangkok Post)
Boing is finally conducting a more in depth analysis of their supply chain to find sources for the long delays of its new 787 Dreamliner. (Strategic Sourceror)

Blogs

Bloggers never sleep. And I would like to highlight the following articles:

Jan Husdal concluded 2011 with some nice statistics. The last article from 2011 was about the “Estimation of disruption risk exposure”, with “the most complete estimation of disruption risks” available. (Jan Husdal)
@risk also published two interesting articles during the two weeks. First, on a study that Japanese companies are shifting their sourcing focus to other countries, due to high local risks. Second, the US Department of Energy (DOE) released his second “Critical Materials Strategy” report, forecasting a decreasing long term risk in supply disruptions. (Japan Critical Materials)
There are many projections out there for 2012 I found the “red herrings” at the Risk Management Monitor very entertaining. Also click the linked list with the full listing as well. (RMM)

Learning and research

SCM Operations reviews an online supply chain management which is offered by the University of San Francisco. (SCM Operations)
Already published in 2009 but still interesting: The Big Picture published an (video) interview with Robert Shiller (Yale Professor) on evaluating risk. (The Big Picture)

UK Infrastructure Resilience - This Week in Supply Chain Management (44 / 2011)

Yet another week. I finally handed in the first part of my dissertation thesis, of course just-in-time on the 31st. So right now I prepare the second part, with the results of my exploratory expert interviews on supply chain risk mitigation strategies and insights of a simulation study using agent based simulation.

This week, thinking about the case of Thailand, I also realized how a country’s level of infrastructure affects the individual companies risk. But also the individual risk management is important: When I was in Thailand this year (July), I asked the supply chain manager of a large retailer with a DC just north of Bangkok, what risks were on his priority list. I did explicitly ask for floods, but sadly, they were not on the list…

News

The Financial Times had two nice articles on supply chain disruptions this week: “Do complex supply chains make you too vulnerable?” with a summary and lessons from the Thailand flooding and “Supply chain disruption: sunken ambitions” with interviews on how to mitigate supply chain risks. Kyle Krug reports on recent disruptions at the port of Oakland and its impacts on supply chains and especially 3PLs. (Griffin Logistics)

Blogs

Ken Simpson summarized a current infrastructure resilience initiative by the UK government, focussing on resistance, reliability, redundancy and response and recovery. (Contemplating)

Research

GXS has a short summary of some of the results of the 2011 “Supply Chain Risks” study by the The Association for Operations Management (APICS). Companies are most vulnerable to natural disaster disruptions and missing information sharing. (GXS)

Flood Disruption - This Week in Supply Chain Management (43 / 2011)

Happy 200!
This is my 200th article on the SCRM Blog.
One of my goals for this year was to build a good foundation on supply chain management for you, the readers, to be able to browse through a collection of great articles on supply chain risk management, and related topics.

The rising number of reviews made it possible to have a separate category on SCRM Introduction. In nearly 20 articles I wrote about topics, like:

supply chain management in general (1, 2) and supply chain strategies (1, 2),
early risk related literature and the Bullwhip-Effect,
risk management in supply chains (1, 3, 3, 3, 5),
categorization of risks and management (1, 2, 3) and
special risks like disruptions (1, 2)

But these article only make up 10% of the now 200 articles published during the last 23 month!

News

Thailand floods are still in the news, have a look at Reuters for a great overview of the effects on companies in that region. (Procurement Leaders, Supply Chain Matters, Bloomberg, Bangkok Post, Reuters)

Research

The CSCMP just issued a call for papers on Contemporary Issues in European Logistics and Supply Chain Management, deadline for the event in April in Frankfurt, Germany is January, 9th. (CSCMP)
Supply Chain Management Review has a short summary of a recent group session with SC executives on the current issues in supply chain management. (SCMR)
The case study on Ciscos efforts in supply chain risk management can be previewed for free in the form of a (full) inspection copy. (GlobaLens)

CSCMP conference and Thailand - This Week in Supply Chain Management (41 / 2011)

I am not a big fan of huge announcements, but some of you already noticed a small change on all pages of this supply chain risk portal: After my wedding in September I took the last name of my wife (Dumke). So just this week I changed all the entries here and adapt a few accounts elsewhere on the internet and now we are up and running again. So right now I use this incident to monitor how fast such changes propagate through the common search engines.
Search engines also helped me finding some of the best articles on the web this week, which I linked below.

News

Big in the news was the Thailand flooding and its impacts on supply chains located there.
- Supply Chain Digital reports of the struggling automobile supply chain. (Supply Chain Digital)
- When I visited Thailand in July, I was also made aware of several of the local hard disk manufacturers. MenaFN has a short story on Seagate’s problems with the floods. (MenaFN)
- Lastly, the Strategic Sourceror summarized two other stories. (Strategic Sourceror)
The World Economic Forum blog also takes a look at supply chain risks, which might also be influenced by financial crises of countries around the world. (ForumBlog)

CSCMP conference

As part of last weeks CSCMP conference in Philadelphia IBM provided some details on its Total Risk Assessment Tool. (SC Digest)
