Airbus vs. Boing - This Week in Supply Chain Management (21 / 2012)

I successfully finished planing for our trip to Norway. I am really looking forward to some days off.
Now the final plans also include a hike to the Preikestolen, a wonderful rock formation at the Lysefjord.

The Operations Room analyzes the impact of the spanish banking crisis on the Airbus and Boing supply chains (Operations Room)
After the consulting firm Roland Berger published some details on their SCRM approach Booz Allen Hamilton did the same and published a whitepaper on Managing Risk in Global ICT Supply Chains (Booz Allen Hamilton)
For some time now I have been passively looking for supply chain risk management software, up to now with only limited success (eg. here). This week Gartner published numbers, which support the notion of a growing SCM software market. So maybe the next trend will be the inclusion of SCRM topics (Logistics Management)

Information Overflow - This Week in Supply Chain Management (20 / 2012)

This week was filled with preparations for our summer vacation. This year we are going to Norway. We will start start in Bergen on the west coast and for the first week stay in a small vacation home nearby Sand directly at the Fjord. Later on we will drive to Oslo (east coast) passing Hardangervidda National Park. On our way back we will use a more northern route, but that’s still in planning.

The resource-based view supports the notion that a company can generate competitive advantages from the resources it controls. Andreas Wieland points to an article which discusses the question if a supply chain can be viewed as a company’s asset as well. (SCM Research)
Enterra Insights talks about the obstacles to thorough supply chain risk analyses. Despite the growing need for a more rigorous risk management approach many companies get overwhelmed by the complexities involved. (Enterra Insights)

Software

Infosys put a short presentation online, covering the basic risk concepts included in their SCRM Product Suite. (Infosys)

Risk Software and Segmentation - This Week in Supply Chain Management (16 / 2012)

This item is already from 2009, but still very funny: Eric Cartman from South Park singing Poker Face (originally by Lady GaGa). And this is my way to end week 16 of 2012.
For me, this week was about consolidation of my certificates and credentials to prepare my curriculum vitae and other documents for my upcoming application phase.
I started my search this week for jobs focussing on the supply chain side of things. Jobs related to supply chain planning and SC risk management are top on my list, but the later seem to be quite rare (at least in Germany).

Creating a Reference Tree from an existing PDF Collection

I am currently in the Snowballing Phase of the Systematic Review approach (explained here). So I already have accumulated a amount of papers (most of them as PDF files) for my current research goals using a keyword search on several databases (Econis, EBSCOhost and ScienceDirect, etc.).

Problem

Now I thought about how to proceed with the analysis of the references mentioned in the papers I already found. I was afraid, that the amount of work necessary, to make a manual analysis of all papers available in my library and manually would be just overwhelming.
My calculation was as follows: My library for this goal consists of 200+ papers, let’s assume each with 15 references, thereof seven already in my library. From the remaining eight references per paper, three are going to be relevant for my research.

So in sum I would have to screen over 3000 references (for relevance for my research goal and for existence in my library) and have to manually copy and paste 600 papers into a database search engine.
Even if I am very fast it sounds like hours of monotone, uninteresting labor.

Solution

Usually in those situations I try to rely on the internet to help me with a tool, but after I made a thorough search I did not find anything which could help me with my problem.

So at the moment I am reactivating my Python skills and learning something about regular expression to turn something like this quote from a PDF:

Into a list of author-year-title-combinations which can be automatically compared to my existing library (using Papers) and made into a search query at Google Scholar or a similar database.

Status

At the moment I am making good progress with the core pattern matching. The open questions are how to read from the PDF files and how to compare the results to my existing library (using title and author or only title).
I will post update.

Future work could then analyze the possibility to create a reference tree connecting the literature within a library to show “connections of thought” between them.

Up to now I have worked with many different Operating Systems including Windows, Solaris, Linux and OS X. For my backup I am still using a FreeBSD box, but since three years I call myself a switcher, and converted to Mac.

Of course there is always a love / hate relation between man and machine, but overall the Mac is the best computer and software combination you can buy at the moment.For my paper management I am using a software called Papers, which also handles the access to some databases and search engines. The one I used most up to now is still scholar.google.com. Most of the papers can directly be imported from Google into my library and if I have the corresponding PDF I am able to attach it there.

For reading I am using the OS X built in PDF reader, it has some nice features to highlight text and make comments. To enhance the reading I am thinking about getting one of those Kindle 2 from Amazon or a similar eBook Reader.

At the moment I am preparing my Exposé, and I am switching between different word processors available on the Mac. I have a valid license for Pages (the Word version by Apple) and there are a few other programs like this (e.g. Word itself or Mellel). At the moment I am aiming more in the direction of a simple text editor, preferable with an emphasis on few distractions like WriteRoom or OmmWriter, in combination with MacTex the Latex implementation for the Mac.
