During this week my research took a turn to the quantitative side. During the last month my focus was on the evaluation of the current research, now I finally can do my on supply chain simulations. So this week was all about getting the output format that I want and calibrating the supply chain model. I hope to be finished during the next week and then I can start assessing some supply chain risks.

What a supply chain challenge. Tomorrow at 10:02 am EST, the Mars Science Laboratory will be launched to Mars, and therefore marks one milestone in a year-long preparation phase and the restart of the ultimate, trans-planetary supply chain. A hundred years ago, sending even small items or messages over long distances took days, weeks or month. Now information travels at the speed of light and cargo at the speed of UPS, all around the globe.

2010
Up to now I have worked with many different Operating Systems including Windows, Solaris, Linux and OS X. For my backup I am still using a FreeBSD box, but since three years I call myself a switcher, and converted to Mac.

I am not a big fan of huge announcements, but some of you already noticed a small change on all pages of this supply chain risk portal: After my wedding in September I took the last name of my wife (Dumke). So just this week I changed all the entries here and adapt a few accounts elsewhere on the internet and now we are up and running again. So right now I use this incident to monitor how fast such changes propagate through the common search engines.
Search engines also helped me finding some of the best articles on the web this week, which I linked below.

How to Get Value Out of Your Returns
Year:
2010
I haven’t written anything about reverse logistics, yet. Mostly because it’s not a focus of in my own research. Nontheless, especially after the holidays returns will be on the mind of many supply chain professionals.
Reverse Logistics
The goal of reverse logistics is to efficiently and effectively handle returned products by establishing infrastructure and processes to accept incoming products and prepare them for resale, reuse, or recycling.

Are you planning to visit a conference in the near future? Scott Berkun and many other authors write about how to get the most out of your visit. Here I am summarizing the key insights.
First, and most important: Think about your priorities!
Many participants have come a long way and this conference provides the means to meet and talk to them in person. So you should use this power wisely.

Even though I read a lot of news this week, there wasn’t much supply chain related. But on the bright side this week has brought several great blog posts that I like to share with you.

I really enjoyed this week’s supply chain reading list and I hope you do too!
Right now I am busy preparing for my visit to Thailand in July where I will have the chance to exchange some thoughts on supply chain simulation and risks. It will be my second stay in Bangkok, but I am really looking forward to it.
