I just found the first supply chain risk related paper from a professor (Biying Shou) of one of my alma maters: The City University of Hong Kong, and I think this a good time to have a look at his work.
I am still abroad right now, but nonetheless I still want to keep the German share within the articles high. So I present to you the second article from German authors in just one week. On monday I already talked about Supply Chain Risk Management in the German Automotive Industry and so the second is today on how supply chain risk management is performed during a financial crisis.
In research the decisions on the product and the corresponding supply chain are usually separated. This happens for a variety of reasons, one may be the reduction of problem complexity, another that the research focus is on a brown field approach where the products are seen as given.
Defining a conceptual framework for supply chain risk management can support thinking about risks in supply chains and streamline the decision making process, and therefore improve the current supply chain at hand.
This is similar to a brown-field approach, where gradual changes and risk mitigation strategies are employed onto an existing supply chain. Thus another source for improvement strategies can be a green-field approach, where the supply chain is modeled and optimized to generate new input for real-world optimization.
In retrospect forecasts of the future often seem dull or at least miss important aspects of the actual realization. In 2000 the Ritchie and Brindley analyzed effects of the uprising Internet on supply chain management and especially newly emerging risks associated with them for small and medium sized enterprises. I wrote this review from the view of 2000 as well so you can decide yourself to what degree you see their hypothesis already fulfilled.
There are many definitions of agility. A supply chain can be defined as agile, when it is flexible and responds quickly to customer needs. Agility can also be seen as a measure to mitigate supply chain risks, building on this thought Dani and Ranganathan (2008) developed a model to mitigate risks using the concept of agility .
In 2005 Uta Jüttner was researcher at the Cranfield University, UK, especially renowned for several minds working on supply chain risk management, like Martin Christopher or Denis Towill.
Computer simulation has not been used on a professional scale until after World War II, and also then mostly for military uses like war games or simulations of atomic bomb explosions nowadays.
One of the first scientific papers on simulation has been published in the late 70s by Ören and Zeigler. They aggregate some fundamental knowledge about simulation and suggest an conceptual model for simulation, which I want to introduce today from the perspective of a supply chain
Setting up the right partnerships is hard to do. There are multiple levels to the decision with which companies to setup formal relations and how deep this relationship should be? Christopher and Jüttner (2000) develop a framework for managing partnerships. The full paper can be found here.
